James Toney Gears Up For September Fight In Southern Cali — Eyes Bigger Fight Next

2009-09-02 - James ToneyProfessional heavyweight boxer, James Toney, is set to get back into the ring this month, as he faces journeyman heavyweight Matthew Greer at the Pechanga Casino in Temecula, California on September 12.

While even James admits the upcoming bout won't bring him back to the status he once had as the heavyweight champion, he says its just the beginning of his road back to greatness.

"Everybody say it's just a tune-up, but I never say a fight is a tune-up because it's somebody that's gonna get they ass whopped. I'm gonna take care of him, and I'm going off to bigger and better things," Toney tells BallerStatus.com, after a morning workout at his gym in Reseda, California, 360 Health Club.

That "bigger and better" he's talking ... is hopefully at chance to face one of the Klitschko "sisters" as he calls them -- Wladimir or Vitali. Either one will do, according to Toney.

When he does though, the boxer says he'll be ready. Toney has been in the gym the past nine months, going through a grueling training regimen he referred to as "straight up hell," which has trimmed him down to 209 lbs (at the time of this interview). With new found motivation behind, Toney is ready to take what he says belongs to him before he finally retires.

After all, he is 41 years old.

"I've never started something I couldn't finish," said Toney. "I told everybody that I'mma retire as the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the world, and I'mma do that ... soon. It's just a matter of time of me getting back in there, and getting sharp again."

With no one placing their bets on Greer, Toney should be able to prove he's serious about getting his boxing career on track.

Aside from the fighting, Toney is also using the upcoming fight to diversify his business portfolio. He plans to sell a live stream of it directly on his official website (JamesToney.com) for $5.95.

However, at press time, Toney's camp says this option may not be available before fight night. But, the plans are in place, and Toney is looking at new, innovative ways to appeal to his fanbase.

"I hate computers. I'm not gonna ... I hate f***ing computers. My daughter be on the computer every night, my wife be on the computer every night," Toney said of the idea. "Everybody showed me a faster way to watch stuff on the net. Everybody telling me it's the wave of the future, and blazay, blazay. They telling me, let's do this and get it there for fans. Whatever we need to make it happen, we make it happen."

In addition to live streams of his fights, his website will also become a fan's heaven for everything James Toney. Not only will his upcoming vitamin line be for sale, but he'll also be selling off memorabilia, such as boxing gloves he worn during his many fights, James Toney gear and more.

As of right now, though, Toney is focused on boxing, and Matthew Greer is his next target.

If you are in the Southern California area, tickets for Toney's upcoming bout are for sale at Pechanga's official website (Pechanga.com). Prices are as follows: ringside is $150, VIP is $110, and general admission will be $75.00.

In addition to Toney, undefeated super middleweight Andre Ward will take on Shelby Pudwill for the main event, while four other undercards will also take place.

Check back next week for our full, in-depth interview with James Toney, in which he discusses his time away, his thoughts on boxing's appeal with the rise of MMA, and of course, new business dealings ... (cough) reality show?

Muhammad Ali united with relatives for first time in ancestral home

Just copped this off the UPI. The G.O.A.T. embraces his Irish Roots.

Over 50,000 people are expected to line the streets to give the former boxing champion a welcome to his Irish roots.

A figure strongly associated with standing up for the rights of black people in the Sixties and Seventies, news of the 67 year-old's visit has lifted the town in the south-west of Ireland.

“Ennis has had rain for three months, June, July and August, it hasn’t stopped, we’ve been hit by the recession, but for the last three weeks, since the offer for him to come was taken up, it is all the townsfolk have spoken about,” Ennis Town Mayor Frankie Neylon said.

“Old and young are united in this. The older people are educating the young children about the great man, and the town is abuzz with activity. There are musical bands preparing, memorabilia is coming out, it is thrilling for everyone.”

Ali’s great-grandfather Abe Grady was born and raised in Ennis before he emigrated to America in 1860, where he married an African-American woman. Ali’s mother, Odessa Lee Grady, was his granddaughter. Abe Grady’s father, John, rented a house and garden in Ennis for 15 shillings a year in 1855.

Only 23,000 live in Ennis, but according to Neylon, a solid fuel merchant as well as Mayor, that will double as thousands flock there on Tuesday morning from Belfast, Donegal and Wexford, many of them Gradys and O’Gradys, when Ali flies in to Shannon Airport from Dublin. “The place is alight with the talk of his visit. I’ve not known the like,” said Neylon.

All roads in Ennis Town are to be closed for the afternoon, and after a civic reception, a motorcade will take Ali through the town, up the Mill Road to the Turnpike, site of the ancestral home of Abe Grady.

The chief of the Grady clan is coming in from London, and three ladies related to Ali, Mary O'Dunovan, Imelda Grady, and Mary Grady Gormley, who all live in Ennis, will meet him. One of the three lives in a Grady family house in the same road his great great grandfather came from.

Ali’s geneology was uncovered in a documentary in 2002 by two Irish television producers.

Ali has never visited the town, although he was invited to do so when his lineage was unearthed. The three-time former world heavyweight champion, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1984, has been in Ireland only four times in his life, the last time in 2003, at the Special Olympics.

On Tuesday evening, Ali will attend a private dinner with selected guests at Dromoland Castle, four miles from Ennis.

IU's Creek gets NCAA OK to start workouts

Maurice Creek IU Recruit Dunking
this in from the Indianapolis Star:
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The wait is over for Maurice Creek.

On Monday, the first day of classes at Indiana University, Creek received word that he had received academic clearance to play basketball this season.

A few hours after getting the news from the NCAA Clearinghouse, Creek joined his teammates in the first day of individual workouts at Assembly Hall.

"I've been telling myself to stay patient for so long that I'm just happy all of that is now behind me,'' Creek said. "I worked hard this summer, did the things I needed to do, and then I just had to wait for the paperwork to all go through.

"Now I can just focus on doing what I came to Indiana for, and that's to help this team win a championship.''

Creek, a 6-5 shooting guard ranked No. 56 in the nation by Rivals, needed to complete a class this summer to become academically eligible at IU. Creek last year attended Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va.

IU coach Tom Crean said throughout the summer he was confident Creek would gain his eligibility. Still, he said he and the coaching staff were relieved the process was complete.

"If someone walked in that room and saw all of those grown men hugging, I'm sure it was quite a scene,'' Crean said. "But it just gave us some closure.''

Creek is a member of IU's six-man 2009 recruiting class, generally regarded as one of the top 10 in the nation. Five of those six have been cleared to play. Seven-foot center Bawa Muniru is on campus as he awaits final clearance.

Creek said he doesn't believe missing the summer playing with his future teammates will be a setback. He said his first individual workout with teammates Matt Roth, Jordan Hulls and Verdell Jones III was an eye-opening experience.

"It was hell,'' Creek said. "It was the hardest workout I think I've ever been through in my life. But that's good and that's what I expected college to be like. Every level you play gets a little more difficult, but it's going to make me into a better player, and that's all I care about.''

Ghosts Of Wayne Fontes/Brett Favre's A Douche

Brett Favre

Cover your ears Wisconsin, but say it with me if you feel it: “Brett Favre is douche bag.” It’s time to give up the varsity jacket and hang it up Brett. Or at least put the kibosh on the act and circus you've created. For someone so utterly consumed with not wanting his legacy tarnished, Brett Favre sure is going the extra mile to do just that. Does he even really want to comeback and play football? Has that been determined?

After all, dude said he isn’t going to apply for reinstatement and that he has until Week 6 to decide just that. Sure, I get it…he’s playing poker with the Packers front office. However, this pissing match of "he-said-she-said" is hardly the logical way for this melodrama to play it’s course. All the while, waiting in the wings is Aaron Rodgers who probably would love no more than to hear Brett Favre got hit by a flatbed truck. That’s harsh, but in reality he sure wishes Favre would just slide on his Wranglers, pack a mint Skoal and toss the pigskin with his golden retriever and his buddies outside some random barn.

Pity on Rodgers who is without doubt and deservedly so; the victim in this whole triangle. It’s not enough just to replace a legend, but now to have the legend lingering over you like a stale fart that just won’t go away. Rodgers can only hope this is just a passing phase for Favre or one last attempt to get his face plastered in the spotlight. Otherwise, it’s going to be hell for Aaron Rodgers.

He was already stamped with the doom of just not being Brett Favre and now somehow, if his prominence in Green Bay is at all stemmed (unfairly) to the Packers taking the firm ground with Favre's legacy…Rodgers will be the devil incarnate. His only remedy in this situation is to now go out and win the Super Bowl. For even if Brett Favre were to call off the dogs tomorrow and proclaim he “really” doesn’t want to play and even endorses Aaron Rodgers, it’s still too late.

Green Bay fans got a taste of Favre wanting back into their lives. He’s the temple of their shrines and they won’t blame Packers management completely. In the end they’ll always feel that if it wasn’t for fucking Aaron Rodgers their beloved Brett would be back. So, keep living on the glory and stealing the thunder Brett. And sure, don’t think twice about Aaron Rodgers, because it’s only his head and career you’re pissing on. Couldn’t agree with you more buddy…it ain’t show friends, it’s show business.

Douche.
