Gang Starr's Guru Dead At 43

Legendary rapper succumbed to cancer on Monday after suffering a heart attack last month.

Just over a month since undergoing surgery following a heart attack, Gang Starr MC Guru (born Keith Elam) has died at age 43. According to a statement, Guru died of cancer-related causes on Monday after a long fight with the disease.

My Thoughts:

This week we lost one of the most Powerful and Knowledgable Voices in Hip Hop - Strike That - MUSIC PERIOD.  I first became of Gang Starr in 1989 while waiting for YO MTV RAPS to debut the Beastie Boys Video for "Hey Ladies". The video right before "Hey Ladies" was "Manifest" by a Brooklyn Duo named Gang Starr. I was blown away and needless to say, we watched the video over and over again - we let the tape rock till the tape POPPED! I lost track of them for a quick second and then in 1991, my brother came home from Hanover College and was like "YOU GOTTA HEAR THE GANG STARR ALBUM!!!". We rushed to Lafayette Square and copped the disc Step in the Arena. Daily Operation soon followed and it is in my top 5 ALL TIME, although many would list ARENA or Hard to Earn before Operation, it is still to me, the most complete Hip Hop album from start to finish.

I went on to work at EMI records and had the opportunity to promote the Jazzmatazz Projects and Hard To Earn, growing closer to the foundation and becoming more familiar with the workings of Both Guru and Gang Starr. Both Guru and Premiere were tireless workers and perfectionists of their respective crafts. I want to thank Guru for always remembering a Country Fed White Boy and showing myself and whoever I was rolling with love whether we were in NY, Miami or Indianapolis. Beloved Readers, everyone wants something. Everyone is searching for something. Antenna Mag presented Lounge 45 at the Public Assembly, and we could see the naked desire on the faces those who came to see Kid Sister, Mello X, and many others.

We love Public Assembly, but we've mostly been there for burlesque shows in the past. Luckily, Finger on the Pulse DJ Twin Sound System and DJ Indiana Jones were also there this time to take our minds off of the lack of nudity. And, judging from the abundance of Colt 45 cans/bottles/urns, the Colt 45 Sponsorship Gods may have been in attendance as well. But the real attraction was the fog of sehnsucht that filled the room. Today at the NAMM Convention and online, Rane officially announced it's new produce The Rane Sixy-Eight. The big news is that Serato buffs will be able to use 4 decks, creating four channel mixes, and enabling much simpler swap outs between dj's. There are two USB ports on the back of the mixer so two computers can be attached simutaneously.  The mixer is slightly reminiscent of the Pioneer M800 which a lot of my friends prefer. The FX processor on the 68 looks a lot more user friendly and intensive (including a rotating button dedicated to EQ. Here's hoping that they make multiple decks available for the 57sl and the SL3 Users!
